ADORNED

Godess-like Mirka in black and white. Today out of the blue I went to "work-hard-mode" and diligently edited these after months of neglecting. These weren't initially supposed to be in b&w but as I was playing around with different filters, just to check, and saw how much better they looked like I had to change my original intentions. I hate to admit it but I actually didn't expect these to turn out this neat. I'm personally completely in love with the atmosphere here. Huuuge thanks to Mirka for being gorgeous and helping me out! I've also been working on a "making of" video that I filmed at one of Mikko's photoshoots. It's finally ready ending up being 7 minutes and 33 seconds long and I can't wait to share it with you guys. In other news I flossed my teeth yesterday for the very first time. I ended up waking up all sweaty and gums aching in the middle of the night after having a nightmare of my teeth falling off and my gums pouring blood enough to fill the whole bathroom floor...

Jumalainen Mirka mustavalkoisena.

LUNA

PHOTOGRAPHER: SARA LEHTOMAA
MODEL: LUNA JOLANDA (BLOG)

These photos are relatively old, I took them in early summer this year during my trip to Helsinki. Well, except the one in the middle which is even older. About five years I'd say. Can't be sure. But it was when I was just getting into photography. I thought it was convenient to combine these three because of  the one common factor "luna". But why share these now? Because of this girl, Luna. I don't know her very well since we've only met once. And I don't know whether my knowledge of human nature is to be trusted but I really liked this girl. And I left her with the impression of her being a kind and true person but a bit of a lost soul (like most of us are even as we rarely become aware of it). I haven't seen her since but I've been reading her blog a lot lately. She's been traveling in Southeast Asia exploring the surrounding world as well as herself. And reading about what she's gone through both physically and mentally struck a chord in me. Especially what effects meditating has had on her life. And it isn't the first time I hear someone speak that way about the subject. In fact many people I admire talk about meditation so passionately that I'm starting to think it's the missing puzzle piece that would complement my life. Like Luna speaks about herself as being "the worrying kind" I feel the same way about myself. Often it is a real burden and I know learning to let go of that pressure would truly be a huge step forward. I want to be a better person and learn how to live in the best possible way. And I believe it's time for me to start actually actively doing something in order to obtain that piece of mind. Oh yeah, and Merry Christmas to everyone! I might not have snow or a christmas tree but I do have wonderful people around me and a good spirit. Click this link for Christmas greetings from me and my brother.

Nämä kuvat ovat suhteellisen vanhoja, tänä vuonna alkukesästä eräällä Helsingin reissullani otettuja. Noh, keskimmäistä kuvaa lukuunottamatta, joka on muitakin vanhempi. Noin viisi vuotta sanoisin (asiaa takaamatta).

First of all, sorry for being lazy about writing in the blog. But I just really can't come up with anything remarkable to share with you guys. That always happens when I'm stressed and my thoughts are all over the place. Probably will get a little easier in a week or so when I get to relax. I have a couple of photo shoots coming up this week, one tomorrow and another one on Thursday. And I'm feeling kind of anxious about them. Which is pretty foolish of me since there's really no valid reason to be worried. I've got Mikko by my side to help if things don't go as planned and great models to work with. It's just that with all the excitement of creating good photos also comes the stress of actually accomplishing what I'm striving for. It is a retarded way to look at it, I know. This temper of mine will someday drive me crazy...

ANNINA

Model: Annina / Fashion Team
Photographer: Sara Lehtomaa
Makeup: Annina Bouthouri
Styling: Sara Lehtomaa

Had some fun running around in second hand shops and creating a couple of looks for this photo shoot I had with lovely Annina. Classic and simple always works and black never looks bad. Which is once again proven with these photos. And I can't thank my model enough, because she did a superb job in looking elegant and gorgeous! I'm personally really happy with how these came out. Kind of regretting that I haven't been shooting too much in the studio while I've had the chance. Only a couple of weeks left to go...

VEERA AND THE BLUES

PHOTOGRAPHER: SARA LEHTIMAA
MODEL: VEERA VÄNTTINEN
STYLING: SARA LEHTOMAA

Shot my beautiful friend Veera in the studio a couple of months ago. I did my basic retouching on these and in addition to that used this new app I just discovered, called PhotoStyler. Easy to use yet versatile and fully loaded with beyond neat photo effects. Will probably be using it a lot in the future as well when I need some special effects to spice up my photos (like I did here by giving them an old touch with noise, blur, color adjustments and framing). You can download it for free online but unless you register and purchase it your photos will be rendered with a watermark after saving. Buuut there are ways around that, being a miserly bastard I should know...the internet is wonderful.

Kuvasin jumalaisen kaunista Veeraa studiolla muutama kuukausi sitten. Btw, sweet jesus, tää tyyppi on ihan mieletön:

SUMMER GOODNESS

This is pretty much what my summer looked like. Other than relaxing and treating myself with delicious foods and drinks and lying in the sun I got really mad (and sad) when I found out that I hadn't made it to the next round in my entrance exams (expressed in the photo of me and my brother giving a finger to the world). That evening was nice, though, despite of the bad news. In the bright summer night we headed to the beach with our bikes and bag packed with beverages. It was beautiful out there, the sky being pink and all. I really miss that. Being face to face with nature and absorbing it all like sponge (since those moments are such a rarity here). Well, obviously you could do the same in winter, autumn and spring but it's not quite as enjoyable. In my opinion nature is at its best in the summer time. I'm such a comfort whore. If I was to decide it would most certainly be warm and sunny all year long. Anyhow, all in all I had a very enjoyable summer and a lot of it was due to the excellent weather. I hope next year will be as good in that aspect. Yeah, quite honestly, I'm not too concerned about the climate change because of the effects it has on northern climate (hehe). Besides, I think the whole thing is a little over dramatized. It's not like there hasn't been changes in the climate of the earth before us, in fact quite the opposite. Sure, we might have impacted it to some extent, but well, everything impacts everything and all is connected. However, I think it's a little arrogant of us to think that we've had such a great impact on the earth with polluting and such. But I'm not a scientist and who the fuck really knows? It's all just speculation anyway, how could anyone really be sure... Also my dog tried to fake her own death. I freaked out for a second when I discovered her lying like this. I'm pretty sure it was her attempt to get attention. Lastly I'm going to provide you with a song I listened to a lot during summer. It's a remix by Lenno of St. Lucia's song We Got It Wrong.

DESERTED

PHOTOS BY JELENA CANDOLIN, EDIT BY ME. TO SEE SOME OF THE ORIGINAL PHOTOS CLICK HERE.

This was about a month ago. In a deserted house. With Jelena, her assisting friend and six sacks of flour. I do admit it, I was kind of spooked about going there (especially since that house was next to Turku's old deserted penitentiary, Kakola). But at the same time royally excited. I have this fixation on old decayed places, you see. It's fascinating trying to imagine what it was like years ago when the place was still alive bustling with people. This building had been an old village store. The first floor (where we mainly shot at) was the shopping space for customers and the next two floors up were huge spaces for storage. We did check those out too, but since there weren't too many windows for light to enter we chose not to shoot there. Anyhow this is what we ended up with. Even as I can't say I enjoyed being buried in flour or afterwards getting a cold I'm glad I did it because these turned out really nice! I got so excited editing these with my brand new computer and brand new Photoshop that I had no choice but to publish them right away. Also, I think it's always a good experience for a photographer to put him or herself in a model's position. That way you'll hopefully learn to become a considerate photographer and most likely provide a far more pleasant experience for the model as well (which in turn will give you a good reputation and thus more people will be willing to work with you). I have to say, though, sometimes when I get really excited about shooting someone I'll forget completely about other people's needs. For example last weekend. I had decided to return to take some photos of my own and asked Verna to model for me. She did so good that I kept forgetting about how cold it actually was...

PAULIINA

PHOTOGRAPHER: SARA LEHTOMAA
MODEL: PAULIINA PALKÉN

Some photos I took this year in early autumn. Every year it's always a must to go out in the nature and capture the spectrum of colors on photo. And even more so when you have a gorgeous model like Pauliina here. She reminds me of some old time Hollywood actress, a fusion of Marilyn Monroe and Katharine Hepburn maybe? For some reason I got around editing these only now after two months. Glad I did because I just received my new iMac which is capable of a whole lot better performance than my old laptop. I also upgraded to Photoshop CS6 and with these tools I really enjoyed editing these. So much that I've been glued to the computer screen for the last couple of days.

Muutama kuvanen jotka otin Ruissalossa tämän vuoden alkusyksystä. Mulle edes yksi syksyinen kuvausreissu on pakollinen jokavuotinen tapahtuma.
